Birding Hotspots: In addition to the Kimiwan Birdwalk, other great birding spots include the O’Mahony Conservation Area where you will find excellent birding for boreal forest and wetland species.
Rat Lake, appropriately named for its high densities of muskrats, is located just west of McLennan and is accessible by road from both the south and north under dry weather conditions. If water levels permit, this small lake is accessible to launch a kayak or canoe.
Lac Magloire, a few minutes north of Falher is accessible by road under dry weather condition. This lake is a major staging site for waterfowl in September.
Winagami Lake Provincial Park offers excellent birding right at the boat launch area. A short paved trail south of the boat launch parking lot takes you to a viewing platform where you can observe a nesting colony of Common Terns and Franklin’s Gulls, watch American Pelicans forage for minnows and perhaps glimpse a pair of Western Grebes with young. Common Loons are also found at the lake. It’s a perfect spot to paddle a kayak or canoe too! Insert link here.
